CHIME Institute’s Arnold Schwarzenegger Elementary School (Woodland Hills, California) successfully integrates special education, gifted and regular students in the same classroom. It is a model school for inclusive education that has been recognized throughout the world.
CHIME Institute implements a co-teaching model where general and special education teachers provide curriculum and learning experiences that meet the needs of all students. The CHIME Institute was established as a private nonprofit corporation in August 1990 to continue the work of the CHIME Project using local funds.
In recognition of their success, CHIME Charter Elementary School was named “Charter School of the Year” by California Charter School Association in 2005 and in the same year was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a leading model of inclusive education.
CHIME Institute works with California State University at Northridge (CSUN) Michael D. Eisner College of Education in implementing inclusive education. The CHIME Educator Development Center offers observation and training on inclusive education for student-teachers at CSUN.
Additionally, CHIME Institute shares best practices in inclusive education, hosting a number of educators nearly every week. Last year, the school hosted visitors from across the country and the world including from New York, Rhode Island, Korea, Japan, Australia and Scotland.
Founded in 1990, CHIME Institute was funded by the U.S. Department of Education and developed by faculty from the CSUN College of Education. In 1991, its infant/toddler program was founded and in 1999 it received its first charter. In 2001, the CHIME Charter Elementary School in Woodland Hills was launched, soon followed by the CHIME Charter Middle School in 2003.
In 2007, CHIME Charter Elementary School was renamed in honor of the Governor of California, to the CHIME Institute’s Arnold Schwarzenegger Elementary School. Located in Woodland Hills, the newly renamed elementary school is part of the CHIME Institute.
